Compostable vs Biodegradable Food Packaging

When it comes to environmentally friendly food packaging we hear a lot of different terms, so in this blog we take a look at compostable vs biodegradable – and what they actually mean.

There are a few main differences between the two. Firstly, compostable packaging breaks down faster and when it does, it creates nutrient-rich compost.

Pac Food has always strived to be environmentally friendly where possible, so we’re excited to announce that our EKO PAK range is 100% natural and sustainable.

EKO PAK’s full range is made from bagasse and are completely natural, as well as rapidly renewable.

Below we go into more detail about compostable vs biodegradable and give you an overview of our new environmentally-friendly solutions.

What is the difference between compostable and biodegradable?

Both compostable and biodegradable packaging disintegrate and return to a natural state.

Biodegradable packaging is typically able to break down within a year of being discarded.

Whereas, compostable packaging breaks down faster (usually 45-60 days) and has the added bonus of creating nutrient-rich compost.

So, if you had a choice between the two, compostable has more advantages.
